SV2 Board Secretary
Diane Parnes has been a long-time SV2 Partner and after joining the Board in 2011 became Secretary in 2012. She recently led the Board in a successful SV2 Executive Director Search effort and also engaged in developing and delivering a Governance retreat around Board and Executive Director relations for a cohort of SV2’s grantees. She has been involved in two Education grant rounds, including as 2010 Education Grant Round Co-Leader where she helped create and launch a three-year funding “Out of School Time” collaborative initiative with the Sand Hill Foundation and the David & Lucile Packard Foundation and she continues to serve as SV2’s Head Liaison working in partnership with the other funders. She is also a part of the current Collective Action working team and served as 2009-2010 Board Fellow for past SV2 Grantee, Reading Partners.
Diane’s 25-year professional career spans the private, public and independent sectors including work in the fields of arts and education, civic and corporate engagement as well as capacity building for nonprofits and philanthropic institutions. She has served as a development, marketing, and executive director at four regional nonprofit institutions, as a national corporate grantmaker, and in 2011, concluded more than a decade of leading the Sobrato Family Foundation in Silicon Valley, CA. During her long-term tenure as Foundation Executive Director, the organization received both the Silicon Valley Outstanding Foundation Grantmaker award and the National Outstanding Foundation from the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) for its responsive community grantmaking in the form of general operating support and multi-year challenge grants.
Currently Diane is a strategic Philanthropy Advisor to individuals, businesses, multigenerational family foundations and donor giving circles in addition to being a nonprofit coach and consultant on Board governance issues, mergers and other strategic matters.
In addition to SV2’s Board work, Diane is active as a Board member and on the Strategic Planning, Governance and Family Philanthropy Committees of the Northern California Grantmakers and also is a Board member of the Silicon Valley Council of Nonprofits focusing on public policy on behalf of the nonprofit sector. In 2011, Diane completed a 10-year tenure on the nationally respected CompassPoint Nonprofit Services Board of Directors where she served as Chair and Vice Chair for 6 years and she also served on the Nonprofit Finance Fund Bay Area Advisory Committee for 5 years. Diane is also Chair of a women’s singing group in San Francisco where she performs.
Diane speaks at various nonprofit and philanthropy conferences and trainings and the Silicon Valley Business Journal in 2010 named her as one of the top 100 “Women of Influence.” She is a graduate of the University of the Pacific’s Conservatory of Music & School of Business. She has earned certification as a Next Generation and Multigeneration Philanthropy Consultant from 21/64 (a division of the Andrea & Charles Bronfman Philanthropies), a Professional Fundraising Executive from the Association of Fundraising Professionals and advanced certification as a Corporate Community Relations Executive from Boston College Carroll School of Management. She graduated from the Center for Excellence in Nonprofits Leaders’ Institute, Stanford University’s Graduate School of Business Executive Education Program for Philanthropy Leaders, and Harvard Business School’s Governance for Excellence Executive Education program.
