Your Philanthropic New Year's Resolutions

Welcome to our new SV2 blog! We welcome your comments and suggestions!

I know it isn’t January, but since the SV2 “year” kicks off in September, it’s time for New Year’s Resolutions! What’s your Philanthropic New Year’s resolution? What would cause you to grow as a philanthropist this year? How can you leverage all of your resources (including your time and expertise) to better the world? Here are some ideas to get you going:

1. Learn - What are the issues that you care about deeply?  How can you learn enough about them this year to become an advocate or a change agent?
2. Make a statistic come alive - We’re all bombarded by information.  Instead of tuning out all of the overwhelming factoids, pull one close.  Resolve to take action on one statistic. Let the full impact of it sink in, and ask yourself, “What can I do about this?”  (One good example, “More than half the world lives on less than $2 a day.”)
3. Get creative - Apply information you’ve learned at SV2 to other philanthropic spaces you inhabit. There are loads of nonprofits out there doing wonderful work!
4. Lead the way - Many local nonprofits would be thrilled to have you as an engaged board member. If you want to see an organization reach its full potential, consider a board seat.

I've been using many of the lessons I've learned through my participation in SV2 as I've begun mentoring several up-and-coming social entrepreneurs. I love how knowledge is one of those gifts that keeps on giving.
