"SV2 Kids" Learn Social Responsibility through Service

May 2, 2012 – How can parents teach their children to look beyond themselves and think of the needs of those who are less fortunate? How can we inspire generosity and social responsibility in the next generation? SV2 Partners are creating solutions to these tough questions through the SV2 Kids Service-Learning program, where SV2 Partners and their kids participate in service projects for a variety of causes, and then reflect on what they’ve learned.

SV2 (Silicon Valley Social Venture Fund) is a high-impact giving circle. Our 180 donors (“Partners”) pool their skills, energy, ideas, and money (at least $5K annually) to make to make 3-year grants to cutting-edge nonprofits.

"As SV2 Partners, we want to teach our children about 'giving back,' said SV2 Kids Co-Chair Laura Kupor. "The SV2 Kids Service-Learning Program is designed to bring families together to broaden the perspectives of our children while meeting the needs of the local community and building a community for parents who are concerned about raising socially-conscious children."

The SV2 Kids and their parents, who live in cities and towns throughout the Bay Area, meet four times each year on Sunday afternoons. Each service project focuses on a different topic, including the elderly, the environment, animals, and homelessness. Each activity has components of learning about the issue area, performing service for those in need, and then taking time to reflect on what they've learned. The content of the program is geared toward children ages of 5-10. When children enter 6th grade, they move on to the SV2 Teens program.

“I love that SV2 Kids gives me opportunities to get my family engaged in service," said SV2 Kids Co-Chair Nancy Yu. "I want to raise my daughter to be a socially conscious individual who understands how her choices can impact the world."

About SV2 - Silicon Valley Social Venture Fund
SV2 is a high-impact giving circle. Our donors (“Partners”) pool their skills, energy, ideas, and money ($5-25K annually) to make a bigger, more meaningful difference than any one person could make alone. Our 180 Partners together decide which cutting‐edge nonprofits will receive SV2’s 3-year grants ($100-150K each) in the areas of Education, Environment, and International Development. Embracing the “venture philanthropy” model, Partners select Grantees that have proven models and are at crucial inflection points in their organizational development, and Partners offer professional advising to help each Grantee build capacity and scale up, not just pay for current programs. Founded by Laura Arrillaga‐Andreessen in 1998, SV2’s mission stretches beyond helping Grantees - SV2 Partners become more strategic lifelong philanthropists as they select and advise Grantees, attend SV2 educational events, and learn from one another.
